The Impact of Putin's Visit to China on Sino-Russian Trade Relations

Created on 05.18
At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin will pay a state visit to China from May 19 to 20. This visit coincides with the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Russia Strategic Partnership of Coordination and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness, Friendship, and Cooperation. It will inject new momentum into the high-quality development of Sino-Russian trade and deepen practical bilateral cooperation.
This visit will solidify the foundation of China-Russia trade, driving both the expansion of trade volume and the optimization of its structure. Under the leadership of the two heads of state, China-Russia trade has continued to improve, with bilateral trade volume reaching a new record high in 2024. The visit will consolidate cooperation in traditional sectors such as energy and agriculture, while focusing on emerging fields like the digital economy and cross-border e-commerce to promote the transition of trade toward higher value-added products. It will also establish a platform for business-to-business engagement between enterprises of both countries, broadening the scope for cooperation.
Furthermore, the visit will enhance trade facilitation between China and Russia and remove bottlenecks in cooperation. The two sides will deepen cooperation on initiatives such as the “Single Window” system and mutual recognition of Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) status, optimize port and transportation efficiency, improve cross-border logistics networks, and reduce corporate costs. Relying on the visa-free policy, they will facilitate people-to-people exchanges and provide a solid foundation for trade cooperation.
In summary, President Putin’s visit to China will chart the course for China-Russia trade, solidify its foundation, and drive steady growth in both the volume and quality of bilateral trade. This will benefit enterprises and people in both countries while injecting positive momentum into the global trade recovery.
